Why is an Engineer Trying to Take Pictures

Photography is a great hobby for the technically inclined. It is the perfect balance between art and science. One must understand the mathematics of lighting and composition to shape a desired view of the world. Don’t get me wrong, many of my favorite shots especially early on were due more to luck than understanding. However as my understanding increases so too does the likelihood that I’ll get lucky. Getting lucky for that matter has a different connotation than it once did. I know what you’re thinking and you’re absolutely correct, in this sense getting lucky means being in the right place at the right time.

Photography has become so much more to me than attempting to master another component of mathematics. It allows me to cultivate and merge my propensity for logic and science with a need for creativity and artistic expression. In a sense it helps me to evolve into a more complete person and experience the world from a perspective other than one of problem-solution (well I am a male).

Finally, photography allows me to interact with those who would stumble into my world with a camaraderie and intimacy that would otherwise not be available. No matter how eloquent or articulate one might be, describing a beautiful flower pales in comparison to a simple photograph. If there is truth to the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words then through this site I am spilling a lifetime of lexicon.
